Five Tips For Building Your Own Website

By: lobardgreg

Once you've bought a domain of your own, what should you put on it? Anyone who has decided to build their own website is taking on a task that can be as rewarding as it is frustrating and that can pay you as many rewards as it does cost difficulties – but it’s still a difficult thing to do, and you still need to know where you’re going with it before you begin. Get started by following these five simple tips.
1. Seek Professional Advice Even If You’re Going It Alone
It's a laudable thing, to want to build your own site – but that doesn't mean you shouldn't pay for a little advice from a professional web designer. Many offer consultations that should help you to get to grips with where you're going with the project before you begin. That way, they're also on hand to help you along if you need further advice from them as you work.
2. Learn A Little About Colour Theory And Visual Impact
There's a lot to be said for making everything just as you like it, but you still want to adhere to the basic principles of design and marketing – think carefully about the placement of everything on the page, consider the sense you're conveying with the colours you use, and pick your images wisely. You don't need to be an expert, but you do need to think about these things in at least a little depth.
3. Take The Opportunity To Learn A Few New Skills
Coding is endlessly useful, and if you take the chance to teach yourself how to put together a website from scratch rather than relying on external designs you'll have that skill for the rest of your life. You don't need to learn everything – just a little HTML and CSS will do you just fine. It's actually all a great deal easier than it looks, and you'll find that you pick up more and more as you go along once you've got over the initial hurdle.
4. Put In The Effort To Make Sure Your Code Is Tidy
Many of the desktop publishing programs that people commonly use to put together websites give you a back-end code that is messy, disorganised and inefficient. If you'd rather use something like that than build things from scratch, you should at least learn enough to tidy things up before you publish your work on the world wide web for everyone to see.
5. Keep True To Your Own Vision For The Site
If you weren't keen to make sure that everything is exactly as you wanted it, you wouldn't be building your site yourself – there are plenty of easier ways, after all! Even so, it can be all too easy to get distracted by the process and forget about the end result. Don't let this happen to you – make sure that you stay true to what you want from your website.
