Five SEO Link Building Techniques

By: Neil MacLeod

Directory submissions

By submitting your website to online directory categories which are relevant to your business, you can increase your search engine position for your chosen keyword
There are a couple of provisos. Firstly, the title that you submit to the directory should be one of the keywords you are trying to improve your search position for. Secondly, the directory must be "search engine friendly". By this we mean that the directory should have a direct link to your website using the title as the anchor text of your link. You can check this by placing your cursor over a directory link and checking the status bar to see where the link goes.
Directory submissions are the bread and butter technique used for improving search engine position. It is an ongoing, often tedious but necessary process used to improve your search ranking.
Article Syndication
Article syndication will allow us a link to our website, using our keyword as the anchor text, from a relevant, authoritative website. This will help to improve our website position in the search engines for this particular keyword
The idea behind an article directory is that people can use the article on their own website, on condition that the author notes (biography) and the link within it, remains in tact. So a link can be gained not just from the directory itself but also the website that use the article.
An article should be over 500 words and contain unique and relevant content. It should be well written and informative about the particular subject. An article is not about your company, it s about the topic (keyword).
The article will be submitted to the many hundreds of article directories on the Internet. Each of these directories allow a biography or section for author info, It is this area that we add your link and write a couple of sentences about your business.
Social Bookmarking
Social bookmark directories are websites that store and allow users to manage their favourite websites. It is very similar to the favourites in your browser but it is an online version and by allowing others to do the same thing a searchable directory is built.
For each submission you provide a title and description for that particular web page. The title becomes your anchor text for a link to the page you submit. This the keyword we are targeting for improved search engine position as search engines crawl these directories. The description would be a paragraph explaining the site. The social bookmark directory also asks you to tag the website. These are words that describe the site, normally comma separated. It is these tags that form the category structure of the directory, grouping websites with similar tags.
A benefit of social bookmark sites compared to normal directories is that you can build links to pages within your site (deep links) instead of just the homepage. We hear from searchenginewatch.com that this will be an important asset in 2011 for search engine promotion.
There are hundreds of social bookmark sites on the Internet. Some of the big ones include Digg, Stumbleupon, Delicious, Diigo, Reddit. Sign up and get bookmarking.
Profile Pages
As well as promoting your website to appear in the search engines, you can also bring in traffic and improve your listing by creating profile pages on certain websites.
A profile page is an informational page about your business on a popular business directory that allows you to elaborate on your business profile, products and services. Some of these profiles page websites such as Hotfrog allow links directly to your website improving your own search position.
By adding your website profile to sites such as Freeindex and Hotfrog, your website will also appear in the search engines from the pages that google finds on that particular directory, improving your chances of a contact or visit.
