Fishing Vancouver Island The Best Salt And Fresh Water Sites

British Columbia is recognized as being one of the best game fishing spots in the whole world, and fishing Vancouver Island is the place to be to enjoy this. The "Salmon Capital of the World" and "Fly Fishing Capital of Canada" are not just statements of here-say, these are real accolades and it is the rich Pacific Ocean water which make it so.

Vancouver island is consistently recognized as the "Top North American Island" by Condé Nast Traveler Magazine, and has receive this accolade for seven years running. The fishing is fantastic year-round from Victoria in the South to Port Hardy in the north and the Pacific Rim. As a spot to vacation it can't be beaten, and it is also popular with visitors who come to whale watch, spot wildlife and visit First Nation sites.

As far as fishing goes the opportunities are unlimited, whether you are new to the hobby, or it has been your sport for as long as you can remember, there is something available that you will enjoy. Island communities are all close to the coastal areas and this makes tours and other services excellent. Because the climate is mild and the seas are protected, all year round vacationing is available too.

There are five species of salmon available to fish, from the largest prize, Chinook, the sockeye, coho, chum and pink. Another very popular game fish is Steelhead which puts up a brilliant fight and are highly prized. Rainbow and Cutthroat trout are plentiful in the lakes and rivers of the Island, and Vancouver is famous for Halibut fishing. These fish grow to large sizes and are simple to fish for. The Island waters also attract large populations of Lingcod and Rockcod.

For the rest of the family in the party, if they don't like fishing for the prize catches, they can catch crabs, prawns, shrimp and clams from the shoreline. Or buy them in local fishing stores, eat these with your catch and you have a meal fit for a King.

Telegraph Cove is where the serious ocean kayaking takes place and is also popular for Whale watching. Broughton Archipelago and the Johnstone Strait are marvelous areas to spend time and to fish from.

If you do just happen to visit Vancouver Island to get in some great fishing, then don't leave without taking at least one whale watching trip if you can. This is an experience everyone should have at least once in their lifetime, and these waters attract, Grey and Humpback whale as well as Orca, other-wise known as killer whale. Watching these big guys frolic about in the water is something very special
