Fast Food and Healthy Food Choices

No matter how much you try to avoid it, you end up in the fast food lane waiting to order food. You have seen all the studies about how it packs on the pounds, but you are running late from work and the kids need to go to practice shortly after you get home. There is just no time to cook a healthy meal for your family. Even if you don’t have time to cook, once you are in the fast food line, you can make good choices and you can also have healthy “sides” waiting at home.

To begin with, be familiar with the fast food places in your area and look over the menu before you are rushing frantically through the drive through between appointments. Planning ahead will help you to be familiar with healthy alternatives on the menu. Make sure your family is familiar with the healthy fast food menu options, so they can decide ahead of time what they want from the fast food menu.

When busy, think of getting just enough food to just to hold yourself and family over until they get home and can eat healthier. This will also be less expensive than trying to get everyone filled up from a fast food restaurant.

These are some healthy choices for eating at a fast food restaurant:

• Grilled or baked chicken instead of fried chicken or chicken patties
• Chicken sandwich instead of a burger
• Specialty salad (with meat) instead of a burger or chicken sandwich
• Fruit or salad instead of fries
• Sandwiches with lots of lettuce, tomato, etc.
• Wraps
• Tortillas instead of buns (like at Mexican style fast food restaurants)
• Grilled fish instead of breaded and fried fish

Having healthy sides at home will prevent the purchasing of unhealthy sides and the added cost. Getting a bag of salad greens and having the tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, cheese, etc cut up and in separate containers will keep the salad fixings fresh longer. Some salad vegetables can be stored in water to remain fresh longer. The water can later be used for gravies or soups. Other sides can be vegetables (fresh or frozen) or fresh fruit. Even canned vegetables or fruit are going to be more healthy than French fries, fried okra, or onion rings.
