Very recently, my sister and I had to face a harsh, but inevitable, reality. My mother's health had been deteriorating for a long time, and though we live 5 minutes away from her, it has gotten to the point where she simply cannot live alone anymore, and we're not going to have the means to take care of her and meet her growing list of medical needs. She is becoming more and more forgetful, her eyesight is failing, and she is becoming more frail by the day. I worry that she could fall and break or hip or worse. In light of these things, my sister and I have had to begin a dialogue about how to care for mom once she is beyond the point of being able to care for herself - and believe me, that time is quickly approaching. Both my sister and myself cringe at the thought of putting our beloved mother in a nursing home; after all, we had a terrible experience with my father (who passed five years ago) in an assisted living facility, and that is not a situation we ever wish to re-enter. That being said, the decision is pretty clear to us: we're going to find my mother some quality home care assistance. Raleigh, NC has a number of home care agencies, so we will simply have to find the best one for mom.
Given that my mother has always loved and cared for us far beyond the best of her abilities, we won't settle for anything less than the absolute best in home care. Cary NC, where my mother lives, is luckily convenient to all of the providers of home health care Raleigh NC has available, so location is certainly not an issue. Were she to live far out in the country somewhere, it could be a different story and we might have to move her into town so that she could have quality health care. Thankfully, though, with the home care assistance Raleigh NC has, my mother can remain in her home, among her memories and those things with which she is familiar. My sister and I are firm believers in her being able to remain at home through her senior years in order to maintain that level of comfort that is so critical to a good quality of life.
Now that my sister and I have come up with a plan, the next step is talking to our mother about our decision to find her a caregiver to provide home care. Cary NC residents know very well that Raleigh's medical resources are vast, and so my mother should have no doubt in her mind that we will stop at nothing to find her the best care in the Piedmont region!
