The term endovascular is a combination of “endo”, which means “from within”, and “vascular”, which means “pertaining to the blood vessels”. In cases of Aneurisma de aorta abdominal or Embolização de tumor hepático, endovascular surgery is done by accessing the affected region of the body through the major blood vessels, usually by means of a thin catheter.
Endovascular surgery is growing in popularity because it is considered to be a minimally evasive procedure and provides a relatively safe alternative to traditional surgery. As most of us are aware, the aorta is the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart and supplies blood to the remainder of the body. When a portion of the aorta swells or balloons it is called an aneurysm. If the aneurysm were to burst or rupture, it would cause a life-threatening condition that would require immediate surgery.
One such type of aneurysm is the Aneurisma de aorta abdominal. It is called abdominal because it occurs in the lower part of the aorta. The Aneurisma de aorta abdominal grows slowly over an extended period of time and often produces few, if any, noticeable symptoms. However, there are some risk factors to consider including but not limited to: a family history of aneurysms, smoking or tobacco use, age (60 and over are considered at risk), and high blood pressure.
Serious conditions such as Aneurisma de aorta abdominal have more adverse affects on men more than women. If a patient is discovered to have an Aneurisma de aorta abdominal and surgery is required, Endovascular surgery is a very viable treatment option. The aneurysm can be accessed by inserting a thin catheter into an artery in the leg, and then threaded up through the aorta to reach the affected area. The rupture can then be repaired by covering the ruptured area with a synthetic graft.
Another use of endovascular surgery techniques is in the embolização de tumor hepático. Traditional treatment for tumours have in the past usually meant removal of the growth itself. However, there are times when removal is not a viable option. If the tumour was cancerous but the cancer had not spread then the tumour could be rendered inoperable until removal options could be further investigated. Since tumours require the oxygen and nutrients that blood supply in order to grow, stopping the flow of blood to the tumour would stop its growth.
As with any medical issue, early detection is the key to be able to use less invasive procedures or even preventative measures in order to handle health problems. However, using endovascular surgery allows surgeons the ability to place small particles into the blood vessel to block the flow of blood to the tumour. They also have the option to introduce drugs like chemotherapy or radioactive drugs that will over time kill and eradicate the tumour.
These are just two examples of the incredible advantages that Endovascular surgery provides to today’s surgeons. There are many other applications being explored as well. As it continues to grow in popularity many more uses will be discovered.
