Ok, so maybe you New Year`s Eve is considered amateur`s night and a night to be avoided altogether. That being said, just know that you will be missing a great number of fabulous events happening in Downtown LA providing a wonderful way to bring in 2009. A brand new year and brand new day. And what better way to celebrate this momentous occasion with family and friends than by doing something a little different this year.
One way to bring in the New Year is to see the Los Angeles Clippers play the Philadelphia 76ers on New Year`s Eve at the STAPLES Center. These teams might not be vying for World Champsionship rings in 2009 but it is always a fabulous time drinking a couple of beers with your mates, watching a professional NBA basketball game at the STAPLES Center. The venue, if you have never been, is worth the trip alone. The design of the Center is second to none and there is not a bad seat in the house.
This will drop you right in heart of Downtown LA which will no doubt be buzzing with high octane, New Year`s Eve, energy and brimming with party people looking to have a good time. The game doesn`t start until 6:30PM which allows plenty of time to explore Downtown afterwards and catch that midnight drink with your friends for a little toast.
Exploring Downtown LA would take more than one evening but since you are there, here are a few recommendations.
If you have not seen L.A. Live, well you cannot miss it. If you are at the STAPLES Center you on the campus. Here is the description from the L.A. Live website, "As a one-of-a-kind entertainment campus, the vision of L.A. LIVE is to a genuine world-class sports and entertainment destination where one can experience moments like this all the time."
Located in the center of the entertainment capital of the world, the 5.6 million square foot L.A. LIVE mixed-used development on 27 acres will be the primary "content campus" and event center for southern California where people seeking entertainment offerings intersect with the sports and entertainment industries at work in an energetic, unique, urban environment covering more than 6 city blocks." I recommend seeing it and drawing your own conclusions. It`s is colossal and will no doubt be bursting with New Year`s Eve events. Stone Temple Pilots make an appearance at Club Nokia that night. LA Clipper, Baron Davis and STP, Scott Weiland double-header! Who can resist. Ok, ok, maybe seeing both the Clippers and Stone Temple Pilots could stretch you financially. So after the game, maybe, you would like to explore the other side of Downtown LA, away from all the neon, glitz and glamor.
One recommendation is to go to the famous, historic Biltmore Hotel for a drink. The premier choice for celebrities, presidents and dignitaries for 85 years! Considering that you should not be excluded from this distinguished list, this is a highly recommended visit which is not to be missed. The lobby alone is well worth the walk from the STAPLES Center.
Since you are close, swing by the Music Center Campus located at 135 N. Grand Avenue which is comprised of 11-acres, housing Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Ahmanson Theatre Mark Taper Forum and the 2003 addition of the Frank Gehry designed Walt Disney Concert Hall. And if you get to Downtown a couple of hours before the game hop into Redcat within the Walt Disney Concert Hall to see 9 Scripts from a Nation at War, a multi-channel video installation that responds to the conditions and questions that have arisen during the military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. It examines the ways in which war determines and "scripts" certain roles such as "citizen," "veteran," "detainee" and "correspondent" and the capacity of individuals to fulfill or resist these. This would a perfect appetizer to a NBA showdown.
Another highlight of Downtown LA is the Angel City Drive In. Ok, there is no movie playing on New Year`s Eve but we assume that you will be sipping cocktails somewhere near Skid Row anyway. So we suggest coming back to Downtown LA, January 17 for the movie, The Professional. They show movies on a roof in Downtown LA! The Angel City Drive-In encourages you to come along and watch films projected on the roof of a parking garage on a huge 24 x 18 foot screen. An FM transmitter puts the sound into your car and food is provided by Angel City Derby Girls. Car Hops bring the food and popcorn to you! It cannot get much easier this. You are welcome to bike or walk in too; bring blankets, as that ground you`re sitting on isn`t grass. It isn`t even dirt. That`s right it`s astroturf for your seating pleasure. If I have said it once, I have said it a million times, an experience not to be missed.
Downtown LA offers a variety of entertainment for every type of person and every type of whim. It is a fantastic playground for the urban explorer. And New Year`s Eve would be a great opportunity to see the area in its` full swing. And to get a better insight into the architecture, the urban landscape, the history and the backstory of Downtown LA, we suggest coming back and hoping on an Esotouric Bus Adventure.
