Dietary Supplements And Their Benefits

Generally speaking, a dietary or health supplement is a preparation that will usually take the form of a powder, tablet or shake. These preparations are developed to specifically provide the desired nutritional addition to your diet. Supplements can be developed to provide pretty much every type of nutrient there is, such as fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and most commonly of all, protein.
There is international disagreement as to whether these supplements fall under the category of food, or drugs. Supplements providing dietary minerals or vitamins are recognised by the UNs highest authority of food standards (the Codex Alimentarius Commission) as a food item.
Protein supplements are probably the most common, but there are many different types of protein supplement. Whey isolates for example are a type of protein that will usually contain L-Glutamine for recovery, amino peptides for muscle growth & recovery and, Taurine for improved energy output.
Powdered proteins are often used by bodybuilders. These proteins will normally be consumed immediately before and after a workout, or in place of a meal. The reason this type of protein supplement is so popular is because a regular intake of protein into the body means healthy muscle growth and repair.
Whey protein (as mentioned above) is most common type of protein. It is very quickly absorbed into the body and contains high levels of all essential amino acids. It is a mixture of globular proteins (soluble globe-like proteins) that have been extracted from whey, which itself is a liquid by-product of cheese production.
Casein (milk protein) is another kind of protein that has very high levels of Glutamine which aids the bodys recovery. It also contains a substance that lets the body absorb amino acids over a longer time period. This substance is called casomorphin.
There is a vegetarian alternative protein supplement, and that is soy protein. It contains all the essential amino acids and a type of phytoestrogen with weak estrogenic activity which can give greater testosterone levels.
