In order for our bodies to achieve a healthy status and remain healthy, itís important that our diets include healthy foods which contain the five different types of nutrients as well as consume eight or more glasses of water per day. Nutrients are an essential part of our diets that are used in the formation and function of our bodies as well as the functioning of different metabolic processes. Without proper nutrition and the proper nutrients within our diet, our bodies can become prone to illness, infection, disease and disorder.

What are the basic five nutrients? Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats, Minerals and Vitamins.

Another very important factor in everyoneís diet is water. It is, quite simply, an essential requirement for human sustenance. In fact, without water the human body cannot survive for more than a 7 day period. By comparison, in extreme situations, a person can go without the food Ė or the five basic nutrients Ė for a period of 2-8 weeks.

When you are eating healthy you learn new ways to eat. Adding more fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains to your diet while cutting back or eliminating foods which are high in fats, salt and sugars. Itís also important to practice moderation, variety and balance in your diet.

Moderation: Itís important that you donít consume too much of any one thing. All foods should be eaten in moderation. When eating healthy, even some sweets can be okay.
Variety: Choosing different foods from each food group will bring a vast variety to your diet. Instead of a banana each time you want fruit, try a kiwi, orange, banana, cantaloupe or something else that strikes your fancy.
Balance: Itís important that you listen to your body and eat when you are hungry and stop eating when you are satisfied. Eat foods from each of the following food group (Donít forget to eat variety) Grains, Proteins, Dairy and Vegetables & Fruits.
