Diagnosis of vitiligo with wood's lamp

Wood's lamp is apparatus used in diagnosis skin disorders through that ultraviolet light is targeted onto the skin of victim, (at a wavelength of approximately 365 nanometers). This light is invisible to the human eye. It was invented by a physicist Robert Williams Wood, of Baltimore in 1903.

Generally the lamp should be allowed to warm up approximately for 1 minute. The examination room should be perfectly dark; a windowless room preferable. This technology is being used in dermatology since 1925, and examination under woods light can be useful in the diagnosis of many skin conditions like infections, and pigmentary disorders like vitiligo.

Wood's lamp does not require a sufficient expertise to use this device.Though, a few practical tips should be conducted to keep away from misapprehension of results. The light source should be 4 to 5 inches from the laceration. Washing the area before subjecting it for Wood's lamp examination should be avoided since it may yield false negative results due to dilution of the pigment. Topical medicaments, lint and soap residues should be wiped off from the site to be examined since these may fluoresce under Wood's light. you can get further information visit website http://www.antivitiligo.com/vitiligo/vitiligo-woods-lamp.html

Loss of pigment from the skin is the hallmark of vitiligo which can usually be easily seen by the naked eye in dark skinned people. It may however be very difficult to appreciate in fair skinned people because the difference in color of normal and abnormal skin is hardly any. This is where woods lamp can be very handy. The normal function of melanin is to block and absorb the light. Since there is less or no epidermal melanin in the vitiligo affected patches, it can not block the light emitted from deeper layers of the skin. The vitiligo affected skin appears like window of blue white light with sharp margins. Woods lamp s hence helpful in the diagnosis of vitiligo, especially in the fair skinned people.
