Of course, a simple toothache does not automatically mean you have to visit the dentist immediately. For example, a toothache that bothers you for at least one or two days is something you shouldn’t ignore. The same can be said when we talk about severe toothache or the type of tooth pain that gives you fever or earache. Your dentist will need every bit of information about your medical history in order to determine which treatment is suitable for you. A physical examination may sometimes be required for the same purpose. You will also be interviewed to describe the pain, when it started, where it is located, what makes it worse, and what relieves it. Depending on what kind of toothache you’re dealing with, your dentist may recommend you to get have an x-ray.

Naturally, the treatment depends on the cause of the problem. Cavity-induced toothache will probably necessitate tooth extraction. On the other hand, a root canal procedure will be necessary for toothaches that are caused by nerve infection. If you are experiencing jaw swelling or fever, then antibiotics will surely be prescribed. Inflammation and pain can be decreased by phototherapy with cold laser.

As the classic medical adage goes, “an ounce of prevention is always better than a pound of cure.” The same rule applies to dental care.
