Culinary Skills – Chef Training Program Offers Speedy Entry Into the Field

Did you know that in as little as one year, you could be working in a restaurant, resort or hotel, hospital or retirement home, catering company or with food processors and manufacturers preparing innovative and delicious meals, creating new menu items and expanding your culinary repertoire? It’s possible with Centennial College’s two-semester culinary skills chef training.

The Culinary Skills – Chef Training offering results in an Ontario College Certificate, and gives students the skills and attitudes necessary to carry out their duties in a safe and professional manner. Here is a closer look at how the program works.

Applicants must have completed at minimum an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or have mature student status (19 years or older); as well as English Grade 12 C or U, or equivalent (minimum grade required) or take the Centennial College English Skills Assessment for Admission.

Instruction balances practical and theoretical aspects.

All instructors in the program have industry experience, ensuring that the knowledge and personal anecdotes students receive are relevant.

Students learn culinary skills and techniques that give them the competencies to work in an intensive and fast paced kitchen.

Among the specific courses in the offering are: Culinary Skills – Foundation and Development, Bakeshop Principles and Practices, Numeracy and Computers for Culinarians, Garde Manger & Butchery, Human Resources & Career Planning, Kitchen & Dining Room Practices and more.

All hands-on classes are facilitated from the state of the art Culinary Arts Centre.

The Culinary Arts Centre underwent a $3.5 million renovation, which has yielded two enormous professional kitchens and a bakeshop lab totaling 7,600 square feet.

Another facility at Progress Campus that benefits students is Horizons Restaurant. A living learning lab, this eatery allows students to cook and serve food to customers in real time.

While completing each chef training course, students also have the opportunity to gain certifications with the Smart Serve program and the National Sanitation Training.

Thanks to the rounded education students gain in the chef training Toronto-based program, they are able to find careers in a multitude of food service industry settings.

Should they want to continue their culinary education, grads are eligible for transfer credits to the two-year Culinary Management - International program.
