Create Your Own Halloween Costume Contest!

By: Joanne D. Getz

Dressing up and wearing costumes for Halloween is so much fun. Hosting your own costume contest can be even more fun! Maybe you’ll be hosting the costume party this year and having a contest will boost the energy level and excitement factor. You will need a check-in, rules, judges, and of course awards! Here are a few simple ideas on how to come up with your own contest.

The where: Where will your contest take place? Will you be hosting a costume party for invitees to join or maybe just a neighborhood cul de sac get together where a contest will take place?

The Rules: You will need to decide who can join in this contest and will there be different age tiers. It wouldn’t be fair for a hairy adult pirate to go up against an adorable toddler. If many ages are involved you will need to have an age tier of winners. You will also have to decide what type of costumes are allowed, if its an adult only party then it mostly likely won’t matter, but if this is a family affair then you will need to note that all costumes must be G-rated.

Check-In: Will you have entrants check in to be entered into the contest, or will they simply tell you? If this is a larger contest then you will need a check-in area to organize contestants.

Judging: It’s only fair to let contestants know what they will be judged on. Will this be based on cuteness, creativity, silliness? You will have to decide what you will base judging on, as it wouldn’t be fair to simply say… ”I like this one best.” Who will be the judges? There should always be more than one judge to promote fairness.

Awards: The finale of the contest is announcing the winners and giving the awards. These awards should be decided before-hand and let known to all participants to boost the level of play. Some people may really want to win thus will try for an awesome costume! Awards should be given in relevance to the size and amount of entries to a contest. If you are expecting 50 people entering then a $10 gift card wouldn’t be enough. Will you have second and third place winners?

Be sure to remember it’s more fun with more winners and participation levels rise as well Costume contests takes planning and help! It would be best to print out rules and prizes in the invitation announcement. Remember, don’t stress out, keep it fair, and have fun!
