Cork Floors – Frequently Asked Questions

By: Vikram Kuamr

Throughout the years, cork floorings have steadily gained popularity. Many residences, office buildings, and even stores throughout the United States have been fitted with this. However, despite of its popularity, many are still apprehensive about using cork tiles due to the myths considering its durability and other features. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about them.

Are cork floors durable?

Many underestimate their durability due to them having a certain degree of softness. However, they are in fact the opposite. These are very durable. In some cases, they can be considered more durable than hard wood. Cork is not water absorbent, resists molds, bacteria, and mildew, and is somewhat elastic. One of its primary uses of cork is as a wine bottle stopper. It is also used as a stopper in laboratories for many types of liquids and chemicals. A good testament to its durability is an old church near Chicago where they were installed in 1898.

Can dents appear on cork floors?

They can dent but since they are elastic, they will return to its original form over time. However, this does not mean that cork is indestructible. If heavy objects are placed on a cork floor temporarily, a dent will form. When the object is removed, the affected area will return to its original form. However, if the heavy object is placed on a cork floor for extended periods of time, this can cause damage in which the area affected may not recover and will need to be repaired. To prevent this from happening, pads should be placed under heavy objects to disperse the weight over a wider area.

Are cork tiles scratch proof?

Cork tiles are durable in many ways. Unfortunately, the finish is not and this is what gets scratched. Scratched finishes are easy to repair. The area affected is sanded to remove the scratch and a new coat of finish is applied.

Will the finish fade or peel?

Cork is a type of wood, and like any other type of wood, it will fade over time. However, the colors used on cork tiles added to the varnish, will provide protection thus taking it more time to fade. For an added layer of protection from sunlight, you can opt to add UV protection on your windows.

Will cork warp?

Since cork is a wood, it is also susceptible to heat and humidity, and will expand and contract to changes in temperature and humidity. To minimize this type of action, cork tiles are first stored in the room where they are to be installed until they acclimatize at living temperature.

Can damage tiles be replaced?

In the event that some tiles are damaged, these can be replaced. However, it is important to note that due to aging, the color of the tiles will slightly fade. When this happens, it will be difficult to find new tiles that will match the color of the remaining tiles.
