Compatible Google Apps for Windows 8

By: Brooke M. Perry

Windows 8 has been around for quite some time and is the best new OS that Microsoft has come up with. Even though, the new OS is being widely used by technology users and shipped with touch devices and hybrids, but Google still have not created specific apps for this OS. However, if you are given a list of some apps that are compatible with this version of Microsoft OS it would be easier. Let us look at handful of Google apps that can work well with Windows 8 Phone, Windows 8 PC or Windows 8 tablet.

Best Search Engine

The latest app that you can rely upon by Google is the Google Search app that can be found at the Windows Store. When you install it on your device, the screen will be displayed like the Windows 8 style. This app is designed to be a rival to Bing. Even if you are using Internet Explorer you can choose to make settings to use Google as your default search engine. However, this is only possible when you are using desktop with IE on it.

Using Chrome

Google Chrome too is available that can be easily installed on your system or any hybrid that you are using. This can be set as your default browser, this way you will be easily able to access Google accounts. Your accounts may include extensions, apps, synchronized bookmarks and other browser related data. You have a choice to toggle between the desktop mode and Windows 8 mode for Google Chrome browser. However you must remember that if you were running system on Windows RT then it would not work. Any third-party browser is banned by Microsoft and the only option available is IE.

Integrating your Contacts and Calendar

Gmail account is yet another app that is compatible with the OS as its mailing account. We all know that everything including organizing e-mails, marking favorites, notifications and creating folders specific to subject or a person, is easier with Gmail.

You can easily add the Google account by launching the Mail app-> Click Windows Key + I, this will reveal the Settings charm-> Accounts.

In the Accounts option, select Google account and use your e-mail user-login details, which will help synchronize your contacts at one place. It would be easier for you to manage your contacts and calendar on e-mail irrespective of the device you are using.

Create a pin on home page

You can use the pinning feature with Google apps. Pinning shortcuts to Google Drive or other such websites including Google Maps is easy. These will then appear on your home screen and with just a single click you will be able to access them.

Here is how you can pin a website to your Home Screen or Start Screen:

Launch Chrome-> Menu->Tools-> Create Applications Shortcuts, now when a shortcut is created, with right click select the option of ‘Pin to Start,’ this comes handy for desktop or tablets.

After reading through the options mentioned here now you know that you are not left alone with Windows 8 and no apps. You can easily use these apps, as they are compatible to the OS.
