Comparison between New & Refurbished Power Tools

By: James Marshell

It doesn’t matter if you buy air tools, hand tools or some other kind of tools, you must have come across the term of refurbished power tools. Reconditioned or refurbished tools are the ones that have been sent back to the manufacturer because of a minor cosmetic or technical defect. Manufacturer fixes the glitch and sells them again on the market but with a slightly different packaging.

Refurbished power tools are a great way to save some hard earned cash if you know your way around the tools and have the ability to make smart decisions. Here is how refurbished tools compare to the new power tools.

It is really interesting to note that refurbished tools are more thoroughly tested than new tools. After the manufacturing process, new tools go through the standard quality assurance process but they still might have some defects. On the other hand, tools that are sent back to the manufacturer for reconditioning are tested and assessed to the highest quality assurance standards to ensure that they are 100% fit and ready to go.

In fewer words, it can be said that when it comes to quality, refurbished tools have a better chance of standing on a higher ground.

The most luring feature of a refurbished tool is its price which can be 20% - 70% lower than the price of a new tool. Because of the defect in the original tool, the manufacturer has to compensate for letting a substandard tool out in the market and that compensation comes in the form of heavy price cuts. Tradesmen basically get the same tool, sometimes even better, for a fraction of the original tool’s price.

Refurbished tools have slightly different packaging than the new ones and it is mentioned on the packaging that the tool is not new but a refurbished one. The purpose of the different package is to separate the refurbished tool from the new tool.

New tools usually have longer warranty period than refurbished tools. For example if a new tool has a warranty of 1 year then for the refurbished version of the same model will have the warranty of 3 – 6 months. Some manufacturers may provide the full warranty of the new tool with refurbished models but that is extremely rare.

Note that there are many con-artists who rob simpletons using the moniker of refurbished tools by selling low quality stuff. Never fall for the trap if the tool is not from a renowned manufacturer like Makita, Porter Cable, DeWalt, Bosch, Milwaukee etc. If you are out in the market to buy refurbished power tools, ensure that you are buying branded high quality stuff and you would be able to pick a defect if there is any.
