Cloth Diapers for Your Baby and The Planet

By: Robert Thomson

The facts are indisputable. There are more reasons to use cloth diapers than to use the disposable pamper or diaper. In fact, there are so many viable reasons ranging from improved health to safety and even to economy that families that still use disposables are missing the boat and performing a disservice to baby along the way.

It is really amazing when you think about it. Nowadays, families think of babies and they think about disposable diapers. It is just one more case where common sense and reason have succumbed to perceived convenience that isn't really as convenient as appears.

Please hear me out. Your baby's well-being is at stake.

- Safety - Perhaps the most compelling case for cloth diapers is safety. Would you knowingly expose your baby to Dioxin, Tributyl-tin (TBT) or sodium polycrylate? Well, here's your notice. If you are using disposable diaper products, that is exactly what you are doing.

It is no joke either. Dioxin is listed by the EPA as the most toxic of cancer related chemicals. TBT causes hormonal problems and sodium polycrate opens up a whole other can of worms. If our mothers knew what was in those disposable diapers, they never would have used them. Now that we know, what are we waiting for? Get safe. Go with cloth.

- Responsible Landfill Reduction - It may seem silly but your baby is going to inherit this planet. More than 92% of all single-use diaper products go to the landfill. Imagine close to 27.4 billion disposable diapers filling up the landfills each year. Disgraceful! It turns out that disposable diapers are not as disposable as we thought. Each one will be around for more than 200 years. Think about it!

- Comfort - How would you like to wear one of those plastic, rubberized pads around all day? As long as you are wearing something, shouldn't it be comfortable? What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Baby deserves to be comfy and snuggly. C'mon!

- Skin Condition - Cloth diapers do not contain those nasty chemicals that can accentuate diaper rash. What could be better than a bit of powder and a nice, dry cloth diaper? Certainly not a rubbery, plastic thing filled with aggravating chemicals. Be real.

- Ease of Use - If you think cloth diapers are not as easy to use as disposables, you have not checked lately. We are no longer talking about pins and matching those corners. There are all sorts of cloth diapers, including form-fitting snugglies with elastic waistlines. You name it, it comes in cloth.

- Flexibility - You can choose the fabric, the style and even how the cloth diaper is made. Baby deserves it just the way you order it. Certain cloth diapers are even waterproof.

- Fashion - No kidding. There is just something so adorable about a baby and a cloth diaper. What more do you really need? Now, you cannot only select the style, but the texture and the color as well. When you want your baby to feel good and look great, go with cloth.

- Affordability - Many cloth diaper users utilize a diaper service. Of course, that is not mandatory. But, based on the use of a diaper service, which includes pickup, washing and delivery, the cost comparisons are too close to call. However, if you use the diapers for a second child, the cost of cloth diapers is significantly lower than the cost of disposables.

- Sustainability - Are you ready? To serve the disposable diaper needs of one baby for one year, 300 pounds of wood, 50 pounds of petroleum feedstocks and 20 pounds of chlorine will be used. Does that make you sick to your stomach? Think what it is doing to baby's planet.

When you consider health, comfort, the environmental impact, the new, spiffy styles and flexible choices that cloth diapers provide, the choice is simple. We now know that cloth is the safest, smartest choice for your baby.
