Choosing Between Wet and Dry Boat Storage in WA

By: Armando Stokes

Owning a boat can be a source of great enjoyment. As a boat owner in Western Australia, you will be able to spend as much time as you want in the water and find numerous hard to reach, but beautiful, beaches and coves. You can also swim or have a picnic in areas which aren't too crowded. To make sure that your boat is in good condition, it is important to ensure that it is stored properly. If your boat is small, you can just load it onto a trailer and take it home with you. However, for large vessels, this is not a viable option.

For storing larger boats in WA, you can opt for either wet or dry storage services. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Dry boat storage involves keeping the vessel in a dry, garage-like structure. This offers great protection from the weather and prevents water damage. Since the boat is not exposed to the elements, the exterior finish and any uncovered upholstery of the boat will not fade, and look as good as new for a very long time. Storing the vessel in a dry area requires it to be lifted up from the water and most dry boat storage services in WA use a crane for this purpose. Smaller boats can also be stacked to save space. However, dry storage may not be suitable for large boats if the storage facility does not have the necessary capacity.

Certain boat owners choose dry storage when they need work done on their boat. If that is the case with you, make sure that the marina you are choosing allows for such work to be done since certain insurance policies may not allow it. By storing your boat in a dry area, you will be able to inspect all areas of the vessel and detect issues which may not have been immediately visible if the boat were in the water. Certain repairs such as plugging a leak or replacing the propeller are much easier if the boat is not in the water.

A great disadvantage of dry storage is that every time you want to use it, the boat has to be launched afresh. It needs to be put on a track and placed back in the water. This procedure will need to be scheduled well in advance, making it ill-suited for quick, unplanned trips.

With wet storage, the boat will be in the water at all times. Therefore, you don't have to worry about preparing it and can use it whenever you fancy. Most wet boat storage services in WA also provide a constant power supply to make sure that the battery is fully charged. However, since the boat is not covered, it could get damaged due to the weather. This could be an issue for larger boats since parts of the vessel may be exposed to the elements, leading to wear and tear.

By knowing more about both dry and wet boat storage in WA, you will be able to make an informed decision.
