Cancun Real Estate History – Where Did Cancun Come From?

By: Thomas Lloyd1

Some people who’ve visited Cancun, or those considering buying Cancun real estate, may wonder where Cancun came from. Was it an old fishing village like Playa del Carmen, or an old colonial town transformed into a resort? Or was it a traditional Mayan community turned resort town?

The answer: none of the above. Cancun was actually created from scratch over 40 years ago, and the history behind it has actually brought about a large part of its success as a tourist city and real estate market. The following are some of the stages to Cancun’s success.

The Beaches – Everyone knows that Cancun has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. They have soft sand, they are wide and the water is a turquoise like you can’t find anywhere else. Yet, 50 years ago, these beaches were abandoned by all except perhaps a gum tree harvester or two.

The Investment – During the late 60’s the federal government of Mexico started looking for ways to attract foreign investment and individual foreign spending to the country. They saw the potential of the beaches and decided to target this abandoned location for the development of a planned resort community. While at first, private, international investors were hesitant to participate, the government of Mexico moved ahead with the project to create a series of resorts that would provide exactly the comfort, pricing and lifestyle that middle-class American and European tourists were looking for.

The Tourism – Because of the concept to match the demands and tastes of the time, Cancun met with quick success and growing tourism. International corporations saw the potential and began to join in investing in resorts, shopping centers and modern services. The Real Estate Boom – These very factors began to make the prospect of Cancun real estate very attractive; North American retirees and vacationers could enjoy this lifestyle not only on the occasional vacation but repeatedly on an annual basis or even full time! Eventually demand rose, variety increased and Cancun became the center of one of the world’s largest expat communities of Americans and Canadians.

The Ongoing Adaptation and Growth – One of the biggest attractive points currently in favour of Cancun is that it didn’t simply stick with one concept; it has grown and adapted to changing demands and needs of vacationers and expats. Whether it means innovative tourism niches, new hospitals with the most up-to-date equipment, a new runway for the international airport or unique real estate options, Cancun has shown a remarkable adaptability.; Mexico's Leading Network of Specialists for Finding and Purchasing Mexican Properties Safely
