Can Your Online Business Pull Off A Business Credit Card

By: Brian Welks

It is possible to obtain a credit card in the name of your online business, and doing so is an excellent idea. Most internet-based companies sell at least some goods and must ship them to the purchaser. And, if your business lists items on eBay or Alibris, then you will certainly need to ship the items that you sell to purchasers.
A business credit card will enable you to easily purchase packing supplies and postage, and will also assist you in keeping track of the amounts that you spend on shipping expenses if you use the card solely for this purpose.
Even if your business does not ship tangible goods, it is likely to require office supplies, such as printers and ink, thumb drives and other storage devices. Furthermore, equipment often requires repair or replacement. Keeping your spending attributable to office supply expenditures on one business credit card simplifies tax preparation and record keeping.
Most traditional storefront businesses have a website and conduct a portion of their business via the internet. This being the case, a legitimate question becomes whether those businesses should maintain separate accounts for the online and storefront divisions of the business. The answer, of course, depends on the particular business at issue because for some businesses, keeping the accounts separate makes the most sense, while for others, having multiple credit cards under the same account is the most pragmatic approach.
Today, there is no longer a bright line between businesses that operate on the internet and those with brick and mortar stores. Virtually all online businesses have the need for assistance offline, and the opposite is true. Having a business credit card will allow you to track your business's expenses easily, simply by logging into an account and looking at a chart of expenses. When compared to the alternative -- going through a box of sometimes cryptic receipts -- the benefits become even more obvious.
Online businesses tend to use online services, such as web design, content writing, and advertising, to grow their businesses. Having access to a business credit card makes consummmating such transactions a breeze.
