Lanzarote is one of the Canary Islands, and is located about 70 miles off the African coast. For the past 40 years Lanzarote has been a popular destination with holidaymakers; this is largely due to the 300 days of constant sunshine it experiences every year and infrequent rainfall. Amazing Beaches
Lanzarote is known for its beaches, and when you visit you can choose from remote protected natural beaches, and beaches in more urban, developed areas, where rental villas in Lanzarote are readily available. Some of the beaches have beautiful golden sand, and others are stunning, featuring the black sand for which the island is famous.
Papagayo is actually a series of remote protected beaches, backed by high cliffs and offers clear clean water. Other Attractions
While the island is famous for its beaches, there are many things to see and do on Lanzarote. Some of the most interesting will require a short trip from your rental villa in Lanzarote.
Montanas del Fuego or Fire Mountains are a series of volcanoes that are over 250 years old. The area is a national park, Parque Nacional de Timanfaya, and today there is still mild volcanic action in the area. You can take a camel ride or bus to 512 foot summit and eat at the El Diablo Restaurant, where meat is cooked with heat from the volcano.
Jameos del Agua is an underground theatre created from a lava bubble that can accommodate 600 concert goers. There is also a garden, swimming pool, dance floor and bar around it.
The Cactus Garden contains over 1,000 species of cactus, a restored windmill and numerous metal sculptures.
El Golpho is actually one of the old volcanoes, which has been eroded by the ocean over time. It now contains a lagoon that has emerald green water, which changes colours depending on the sun's position in the sky.
The architecture of most of the buildings on Lanzarote is only one or two stories in height, and built in the traditional style of the area. The nightlife in and around the resort areas is very lively. However, Lanzarote itself is more family oriented in general. There is so much to see and do on this island.
