Whilst older techniques, like the Strip (FUT), have tended to yield inconsistent results, and often caused scarring, the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a painless and minimally invasive Hair Transplant technique which involves extracting individual hair (follicles) from the back or side of the head and then inserting them in the thinning area, creating a new hairline. FUE uses tiny needles and local anaesthetic, without causing any scarring or pain.
With this approach you are left with several non-visible minuscule holes, rather than the one big scar as with the strip method. Each hair is implanted at an angle to mimic that of the original hair. It takes hours, and depending on the case of baldness, it can last 2 whole days.
The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant is the least painful and least invasive method available in the market today with the fastest recovery times and natural looking results. The reason of the absence of scars and stiches is that we are extracting individual follicular units (also known as grafts) from the back or the side of the head one by one, using a specialised punch with less than 1mm diameter.
FUE Hair Clinics© have advanced the method and they can extract more follicles more quickly than normal. Typically, between 4,000-8,000 individual hair are transplanted, but there are cases of 20,000 and the cost is between £2-£3 per hair, depending on the amount of hair extracted and transferred.
Since each hair is individually extracted and implanted, the procedure normally last 6hrs, thus you may experience some minor discomfort just by lying down still. That's why regular breaks are provided and you can go to the toilet, eat, drink, etc. During the procedure, you can watch a movie, chat with the medical team or simply take a nap.
The FUE technique is minimally invasive and the hair extraction is simple, painless and heals within 2-4 days. Most patients head back to work the day following the procedure and can go back to sport in 7 days.
There is a resting period of 4-6 months where the hair fall and re-grow, but after that period the transplanted hair will continue to grow normally and you can treat them like the rest of your hair.
After 10 months up to 90% of the transplanted hairs will be growing naturally and will last for a lifetime as these hair are largely immune to DiHydroTestosterone (DHT), which is the 'killer' hormone on the top of the head.
'As long as you have some stable hair on the back and the sides of the head, it is most certain that you are eligible for a FUE Hair transplant', says Michael Psaltakis, the Managing Director of FUE Hair Clinics©.
