Antiaging Skin Care: Switching Over to Natural Skin Care Products

By: Judy Aulin

Aging skin can benefit greatly from natural skin care, but before putting it on your skin you should read the product labels, even if the box reads "natural" product, take your time to find out what it's really made of. Because even products made at home can contain ingredients that cause irritation or allergic reactions.

Before you throw out your current skin care products and switch them for products that claim to have all natural ingredients, make sure that you have the right cleansing routine. By cleansing, toning/exfoliating, and moisturizing regularly you can help prevent premature aging. Sunscreen is also a product that should be part of your basic skin care routine.

We're constantly hearing about new and innovative ingredients that can help keep our skin young, however, the following ingredients are key in anti aging creams and skin care products for maturing skin. So, it's a good idea to have at least one or two products that contain these ingredients.

Age Fighting Ingredients

Each one of the following ingredients is "natural" because it is derived from natural products. Natural skin care products that contain these ingredients have proven their effectiveness which is why it is advisable that you look for products that contain at least one of these ingredients.

AHAs are derived from natural products and used, primarily, for their exfoliating properties. They are also capable of helping tighten skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Look for products that contain the following AHAs: glycolic acid, lactic acid, tartaric acid, malic acid and citric acid.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A can be added to a product as retinol, Tretinoin and Retinyl Pamitate. These are the names of Vitamin A derivatives. They are responsible for reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots.

All forms of Vitamin A can lead to some irritation. If you have sensitive or dry skin, make sure to be extra generous with your moisturizer or look for products with a lower concentration of Vitamin A. Retinyl Palmitate can provide better results without producing as much irritation, however, keep in mind that when using any product that contains Vitamin A you should always apply sunscreen before going outdoors.

Vitamin C

In skin care products, Vitamin C is known as ascorbic acid. This potent antioxidant is very effective in helping to treat age spots, wrinkles, and dull skin. Vitamin C - and its derivatives - is known for helping boost the production of collagen.

Hyaluronic Acid

This ingredient is vital to skin care because it can help keep your skin moisturized. Each molecule of hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, which in lay terms means smoother, plumper and younger looking skin.

Coenzyme Q 10

This antioxidant is an ingredient that can help repair skin damage and improve the production of collagen.
