An Introduction to Mobile Phone Jammers

By: Manuel Ricky

Mobile phone jammers are devices that are designed to prevent cell phones from receiving their signals from base stations. This then essentially disables the cellular phones and prevents them from accessing any signal. Mobile phone jammers can be used in any location, and will work against the vast majority of phones. They have a range of applications, but are most commonly used in locations where silence is required. For instance if you were to be putting on a show in the theatre, then you might want to use mobile phone jammers in order to prevent phone from going off and to prevent people from having disruptive conversations which would ruin other people's enjoyment of your performance and at the same time potentially distract you and cause you to make a mistake.

You might similarly use mobile phone jammers for instance in an examination in school, which can be highly useful as a way to prevent people from cheating using their phones – especially if the phones also have access to the internet through their network provider.
Mobile phone jammers evolved as a response to the ubiquity of mobile phones in today's modern world. Gradually the use of mobile phones began to cause problems in a range of situations – causing academic cheating, disrupting shows and events, and invading privacy.

At first mobile phone jammers were designed by companies with government contracts, but gradually it became apparent that there was a civilian application and so they became commercially available. Sales in mobile phone jammers have gradually increased since.

As phones evolve and become more complicated, so more complex methods are required for effective mobile phone jammers. These are cheap and relatively portable solutions, compared to alternative options such as 'faraday cages' which are enclosures of conducting material designed to prevent the signal from passing through and so cutting off anyone inside the regions.

So how do mobile phone jammers work? Simply they work by emitting radio waves that are on the same frequency that cell phones use. This then causes interference in the communication between the cell phones and the towers which thereby renders the phones unusable. The end user will assume their phone is simply out of range.

There are various variations in mobile phone jammers. For instance jammers can disrupt the frequencies of the communications between the phones to the towers, or by disrupting the communication between the towers and the phones. The smaller handheld mobile phone jammers will block out bands ranging from 800MHz to 19000MHz and will have a range of around 30 foot (which is nine meters). Others can work over larger areas, and the 'TRJ-89' jammer is capable of knocking out cellular communications for a 5 mile radius.

Of course the use of mobile jammers themselves is also subject to some controversy and some people will take unkindly to having their phones blocked. The legality of using jammers ranges from location to location so it is very important to research the use of jammers in your area before you use them. At the same time you need to think hard about how your clients will respond and whether this will have a positive effect or a negative one on your business.
