An Alternative Christmas Rock Fest

By: Perry Stevens

Bah Humbug! It's 'that' time of year again when every bar, shop and television commercial starts to play those oh so familiar jingly, jangly Santa's Kissing Mama songs again.
Well you don't have to play the same old traditional song to mark out the party as truly festive. I concede that any decent Christmas party play-list does simply have to include the default standards sometimes, but does it have to be at the expense of our sanity? These songs start to grate after hearing the same tracks for the 1001st time year after year. Yes we know it's Christmas, how could we possibly forget?
Alas, don't drown your seasonal sorrows in that third cup of mould wine, it's time to get creative! A little time spent searching on the Internet can throw up some wonderful alternative Christmas songs. Did you know for instance that the classic Christmas song 'Silent Night' has been covered up to 3000 times. I'm sure you'll find a version by an artist that pleases your ears even if's number 2999.
Maybe you're more into your rock and metal, again you can find old standards covered by rock royalty and the young pretenders alike. Whether you are looking for The Pogues nostalgia, The Beachboys harmonies, Ron Sexsmith optimism, Radiohead sound-scapes, Bright Eyes intimacy, or Matteo Scumaci's clever  references to traditional carols, you are never more than a click away of finding musical nirvana this holiday season.
