American Silver Eagles - A Treasured Coin

By: Samuel Sterns

In the past, silver has been the most affordable of all the precious metals. Because of this, there is a huge demand for silver and it trades well on the stock market and also sells well for a nice profit. Because of silver and its popularity, American Silver Eagles have seen a huge surge in demand and sales have gone way up.
The American Silver Eagles are the official bullion coin of the United States. These coins were first released in 1986 on November 24th. These coins are authorized to be minted by Congress and the weight and purity of every coin has the guarantee from the United State Government. A guarantee that each coin comes with is that it will contain at least 1 troy ounce of 99. 9% pure silver. Also, each coin has a thickness of 2. 98 mm.
The design on these coins is taken from the "Walking Liberty" design used by Adolph A. Weinman. This same design was originally used on a half dollar from 1916 through 1947. The half dollar was then retired and the design was brought back to be used for the Silver Eagle in 1986. This design was chosen because it was a beloved by many and they wanted to continue its legacy.
American Silver Eagles are produced at 3 different mints. Each mint has their own mark that is placed on each coin to let the consumer know where the coin originated from. The Philadelphia Mint has the mint mark "P", the San Francisco Mint has the mint mark "S" and the West Point, NY Mint has the mint mark "W."
These coins, if they were to be used as currency, have a monetary value of one dollar. They are worth much more than that though. The condition of your coin, the grade coin and the year is was minted will all play into what the coin is worth. On the stock market, the values are calculated on the market value of silver with and additional cost to cover minting and distribution charges.
American Silver Eagles are available for sale at many different venues. The United States Mint will sell these outright to a consumer. There are many websites that are dedicated to collectible coins where they can be purchased. They can also be bought from precious metal dealers and brokers.
American Silver Eagles are a loved coin and are a great investment. They hold their value and have been shown to improve some over time. If purchased, they will be enjoyed for years to come.
