Global warming and climate change are issues which influence us each and every one, and which we are contributors and also activists. Climate change is predominantly a man made effect through our excessive and increasing use of fossil fuel energy. Fossil fuels in the form of gas, oil and coal are trapped forms of carbon energy, stored deep below the earth?s surface. They are formed from biological matter, and through thousands and millions of years of high temperature and force create fossil fuels. When we extract fossil fuels and burn them, we are reintroducing this trapped carbon into the surroundings. This additional carbon dioxide then acts resembling a giant blanket in the environment. As the suns energy enters the atmosphere to heat the earth, the carbon then reflects this energy back at the earth, increasing temperatures. As we keep on to use fossil fuels, this result will continue to increase. However we have another issue on the horizon in the conditions of food shortages, and increasing global population. Currently the resolution to the global food issue is to boost large-scale farming. However large-scale farming relies of large quantities of oil to produce the fuel for tractors etc, and also all fertilizers. Therefore there is a catch 22 situation in terms of energy and food production. The reply to both issues is one and the same, small scale and local energy and food production where feasible.

Local biomass raw supplies such as wood, straws and grasses from cultivation can be processed into fuel by upgrading the resources locally into pellets. These pellets can then be used in pellet stove and boilers to supply heat, and also used in gasification system to make electricity. Owing to pellet gasification, it is possible to feed this gas to bacteria and algae to make liquid fuels such as ethanol. So this may tackle the issue of energy, how does it address the issue of food production? Put simple from using the pellets in stoves and boilers, and gasification units to produce electricity or ethanol, has a by-product. The by-product is ash, and bio-char. These supplies have been established to be brilliant soil conditioners, even to be able to get back desert land, by bring life back to the soil. The uncomplicated point to take from these ideas is the answers are out there, and are proven to work, we need to do something. Not only will it address fuel and food issues, it will bring greater prosperity to us all.
