Acne Control and its Three Main Aims

By: Valerie Garner Garner

You might not know the exact definition of 'acne control' but your common sense is probably right. Acne control is similar to acne cleansing but is more accurately defined as the methods to prevent acne from progressing to severe acne or from returning once one's problem has already been fixed. So, in a way, you are just getting and maintaining control of your acne.
There are numerous methods of acne control. Regardless of which methods you choose to employ on your skin, the intrinsic goals to acne control are:
* Prevention of overactive sebaceous glands
* Improvement of skin health
* Elimination of the P. acnes bacteria
Slowing Sebum Production: Hormone Balance
By managing the hyperactivity of the sebaceous glands, your skin will be less oily as less sebum is produced, have smaller pores and will see less possibility that debris and bacteria mix with the sebum, resulting in less acne.
Additionally, hyperactive sebaceous glands can cause a strong and sudden outflow of sebum that actually injures the hair follicles. This injury is what causes the inflammation and redness that appears as acne lesions.
That said, this task is not usually easy and is usually only needed in severe cases to control acne. Most acne products just remove sebum that has already been secreted.
Sebum production is closely linked to hormones. Teenagers tend to suffer from acne problems due to increased hormone activity, with testosterone directly affecting and increasing sebum production. There are several hormonal acne treatments available. Birth control is often used as an acne treatment for teenage girls.
Improving Skin Health: Nutrition and Health
Overall health will increase that of your skin. By eating a balanced diet and exercising, your body will receive the stimulation and nutrients it needs for the skin to properly heal, repair and grow.
Vitamin A is important in skin health maintenance and can be found in natural and synthetic forms. It is one of few ingredients that actually reduces sebum production in addition to improving elasticity of skin and prevention of wrinkles.
Exercise is a natural part of the human life. When you exercise, your body releases different hormones and proteins and learns to function better. It helps the body regulate itself while improving the immune system.
Reducing Acne-Causing Bacteria: Acne Products
Daily cleansing of the face with a cleanser and astringent if part of the system is necessary. Look for antibacterial or antimicrobial ingredients. Finding the right acne complex takes time, however, you should safely eliminate those that are not oil free or non-comedogenic (as in, won't clog pores). With ingredients you aren't sure of, test out the product on your hand first to confirm you have no negative reaction to it. Nothing can be worse than an allergic reaction on your face!
Go ahead and control that acne. Make sure your system succeeds in an acne control system's goals: reduction of sebum production, improvement of overall and skin health and elimination of acne causing bacteria
