Acid Reflux: The Old Wives Had it Correct

By: Marry_Cambel

Old wives’ tales on acid reflux always have practicality behind their wise words. One of them tells us that it would be best to rest and not do anything stressful after eating. There should be no swimming after eating as this can cause a stomach ache. Another is not to drink anything that is either too cold or too hot.

Wise words indeed when they talk about the simple preventive measures that the doctors advise their patients. These tales are the same preventive measures for counteracting the symptoms of acid reflux, more commonly known to us lay men and women as heartburn.

Acid reflux is the bile that loses its direction. The bile is supposed to stay inside the stomach cavity and help in the digestion of food. Instead, it goes up the esophagus which causes the burning sensation and that ‘biley’ taste in the mouth. When this happens, a lot of people think that they are having a heart attack, when actually it does not even affect the heart. If it is the heart, it would not affect the taste buds.

Sometimes the old wives’ tales may sound ridiculous, especially to teenagers who are in the ‘invincible’ mode. Teenagers usually think that as they are young, they can do whatever they want, eat whatever they want and drink whatever they want, to the excesses of what they want. Then they suffer from acid reflux later on and think that the world has ended. When they get educated on their condition, they stop to remember and then realize that what was going on was the result of their ‘freedom’.

It is true that some acid reflux is sometimes caused by pathological diseases that no one can control. The reality, though, is that most acid refluxes are caused by the irresponsible imbibing of uncontrollable needs and wants: alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, food binges, etc. So if you are not suffering from acid reflux, think about the old wives’ tales and try to remember that these tales are there because they have been happening throughout the known history.
