The third-ranked Serbian of 21 years-old Novak Djokovic, succeeded at the Tennis Masters Cup and obtained the title for first time on his career by beating the experienced Russian Nikolay Davydenko 6-1, 7-5 in one hour and 42 minutes.
The Serbian played with confidence and determination since the beginning of the game by winning the first 5 games of the first set. That was frustrating for Davydenko, who just won one game in the first set and who was trying hard to concentrate, be positive and return to the game.
However, even with Davydenko’s effort to come back in the second set, the superiority of Djokovic’s game was just not compatible to the Russian. Davydenko only got 47% of his first serves and had only 15 winner points to 25 unforced errors. Those errors and his imprecise serve cost Davydenko the game, besides Djokovic was really sharp in the majority of the match; although there was a couple of serves that he double-fouled due to the pressure and the nerves he felt at the end of the game.
This is Djokovic’s fourth title of the year and the first Tennis Masters Cup title on his professional career. Last year Djokovic went 0-3 at the Tennis Masters Cup losing all group round matches; nevertheless, this year things went different as he beat almost all of his contenders (losing only one game in the group round to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga) and succeeded at the tournament. Djokovic expressed that this triumph was a great feeling for him and is one of his best achievements in his short tennis career.
"I would put it in the same league as a Grand Slam because the best eight players in the world are participating here; it's a huge achievement for me," alleged Nole.
The Serbian won $1.24 million on prize money and a Mercedes SUV. In the awards ceremony Djokovic dedicated his triumph to his family, friends, support team and fans. His emotions for the victory were so hyper that he even threw two of his rackets, his shirt and some other stuff to the crowd. With this victory the Serbian is motivated for next year’s season, which will be really exciting for him and the rest of his contenders.
On the other hand, this 2008 campaign has been incredible for Djokovic not only because he won the title at Shanghai but also due to the fact of capturing his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and his two Masters Series at Indian Wells and Rome. Besides that, Djokovic is the first Serbian to win a singles Grand Slam and the youngest tennis player to reach the four semifinals of Grand Slams.
In addition, we have to mention that with this last triumph at the Tennis Masters Cup; Djokovic is only 10 points behind the ranked No.2 of the world Roger Federer, which is dangerous for the Swiss due to the fact that Djokovic can take his spot next season. So watch out for this Serbian, who is ascending with strong feet and impressing everyone with his game.
