A good moral compass directs students towards a career in policing

Whether it is your belief in justice, disposition towards upholding what is right, or amending the wrongdoings in this world, your interest lies in becoming a police officer. A career in policing takes different forms and starts in entry-level positions, which one can pursue after through some training and education. Prepare to fight crime and instill public order, starting with the Police Foundations program at Centennial College.

Employers look for individuals with a good sense of morality, with the mental capacity and physical capabilities for the stressful situation police officers may face. Centennial College trains students to pass police requirements and to handle various police issues. The courses in its police program include a mixture of theory, practical applications, and fitness to teach prepare students to work in analytical contexts while being physically prepared to work in the line of duty. Some course highlights include the following:

The police uphold the law and must be knowledgeable and confident to command the public to follow the rules. Students will learn about the Canadian Criminal Justice System, the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, provincial offences, and police standards, ensuring that they can use the facts and their good judgment when enforcing the law. Students will also strengthen their communication and leadership skills as they participate in police drills and other hands-on training.

With three fitness courses, students learn about a police officerís work environment, train towards the physical test requirements, and learn the proper nutrition and exercise programs they need to maintain.

Professionals need to be strong mentally and endure some disturbing experiences. A course in psychology will help students understand behaviours and reasoning, so they can use it to connect with the situations with others and understand themselves better.

A career in policing varies and may include graduates to conduct interview and investigations. Hence, a course in this area was created to help students develop interviewing skills and learn the basic steps taken during investigations.

Police officers deal with the public, including the youth, in which has Centennial designed a course specifically for this group. Students need to learn the substantial relationship between youths and police, so they can better approach problems with effective solutions.

A crime scene management course will teach students how to properly secure evidence, analyze crime scenes, and file reports.

In addition to the theory and practical lessons, students are offered the chance to participate in a realistic scenario. The knowledge from the classroom will be put into action as students investigate a crime scene in the Community & Experiential Policing course. Furthermore, Centennial prepares its students for employment by giving them career advice in the police application process and by guiding them in the assessment and physical testing.

Graduates can expect to work as a police officer, security guard, and military officer upon graduation, leading to a fulfilling career in policing. Centennialís Police Foundations program offers this variety of job opportunities for its students so they can have wide career opportunities. Additionally, Centennial offers a path for students to diversify into other police-related careers through the help of university partners. With the police program at the college, students will have the background necessary to be in the field and launch a long-lasting career in policing.
