A Day in a Flea Market

By: Mercie Hallow

Flea markets are markets where one can find bargain goods at cheap prices. Flea market vendors are usually seen to occupy from a small space such as a table to as large as market stalls. Flea markets usually have concessionaires and sometimes live music or entertainment in order to enrich and heighten the experience. The term got its name from the French word Marche aux puces where the first flea market has reportedly appeared. It was in alleyways of Paris that the idea was brought to life and was adapted by many countries.
It is believed that the name was derived because of the people's activity in the market and because some goods are infested with these kinds of insects. Some goods that are being sold at flea markets are reportedly counterfeited designer items and pirated movies on DVDs and VCDs. The Silk Street in China is famous for selling counterfeited items and pirated movies in DVDs and VCDs.
Aside from all the negative issues that arise from the world of flea markets they are still being patronized by many because of its cheap prices and unusual finds. Some markets sell second hand goods from the sellers themselves. In here, one can look for a unique find that the previous owner would want to sell for a cheaper price. The market system is more of like a barter system where goods are being exchanged not with other goods but with cash.
Going to a flea market is a fun activity for the whole family. Whether it is mom looking for a new piece of sofa covers or sister looking for that sassy and chic cheap wallpaper to redecorate her room, everything can be found in flea markets. The whole family can have items for themselves without spending for more.
I really cant wait for the next schedule of the IRS Flea Market at New Hampshire. Ive been dying to acquire some unique curios for my living room coffee table.
