3 Unusual Stops on an Around the World Flight

By: Robert Thomson

If you are planning a around the world flight, there are several places you should put on your itinerary as "must see" places. Although many would include cities like Paris and Barcelona, consider adding countries like Morocco, Mongolia and Zambia.

Morocco brings to mind exotic courtyards and narrow cobbled streets. Morocco is an adventure in itself and is full of wondrous landscapes and vistas. The first place many people visit in Morocco is Tangier. This is a city that is located on the coast and has long been known as a city of libertine activities and adventures.

Visit Casablanca, made famous by the movie of the same name. This city is far more cosmopolitan and can provide you with luxurious accommodations and lots of fantastic shopping opportunities.

Morocco is a short ferry ride from Spain. You can also find cheap flights to Morocco to any of the major cities, including Tangier, Marrakesh and Casablanca.

Mongolia is a country of dramatic contrasts. Since the fall of communism, the country has done a great deal to open to the contemporary west and you will find cities with internet cafes and residents strolling along talking on cell phones. At the same time, if you explore outside of the cities, you will find vast open spaces populated with nomads who have lived in the Gobi desert for hundreds of years and continue their traditional way of life even today.

Tourism is a large part of the economy, but the travel season is short due to the weather. Enjoy activities such as fly fishing, camping, horseback riding, hiking and cycling. During the summer, attend the annual two-day sports festival, Naadam. During this event, watch wrestling and other sporting activities.

While in Mongolia, visit the Zanzabar Museum of Fine Arts. Located in Ulaanbaatar, this museum hosts one of the world’s finest collections of the artist Zanzabar. It also has a display of some of the world’s best Buddhist artwork, including masks worn by monks in the 17th century and many sculptures of the Buddha.

Also, take the time to see the Gobi Cashmere Shop, also located in Ulaanbaatar. This shop displays goods from the Goyo, Gobi Cashmere and Buyan companies and showcases some of the finest cashmere products you can find in the world. It is located across the street from the Russian Embassy. Don't forget to book flights to Mongolia before the popular the Nadaam festival.

Zambia is a country in Africa, located next to Zimbabwe. Home to the spectacular Victoria Falls, the Zambezi River also runs through it.

In addition to visiting Victoria Falls, you can take river cruises to explore the wonderful wildlife found on the river. From the deck of your cruise ship, watch sun-basking hippos, herons and other animals.

You can also go on a wildlife safari in the Zambezi Wildlife Preserve. There are many guided tours available where you can safely view elephants, rhinos, lions and other animals in their natural habitat. Be sure to take your camera and take lots of pictures of this adventure of a lifetime.

If you are traveling around the world, be sure to add a few adventure destinations to your itinerary. By visiting places like Morocco, Mongolia and Zambia, you will get to see places many other people do not see, even if they have traveled the world.
